2010 Events Programme
To kick off our 2010 event programme we would like to invite you to take part in our photographic competition, “Murton Park Unseen”. Enter four photographs, taken throughout the year at Murton Park, which best represent the changing seasons. With 3 age categories this is open to all. For more details please call 01904 489966.
February
Be a Viking, 11am – 3pm Wednesday 17th Join us this half term as the Viking Festival gets underway. Discover how our ancestors lived 1100 years ago. Join us on the Village to make an oil lamp or a Viking bracelet and settle around the fire to hear Viking tales of adventure!
March
Make a Mini Garden, 10am – 4pm Sunday 7th A perfect time of year to plant up a mini-garden. Add your own touches with all materials supplied, then take it home and watch it grow!
April
Easter Eggstravaganza, 10am – 4pm Sunday 4th & Monday 5th Come and meet the Easter Bunny. Make an Easter basket for all that chocolate or decorate your own egg and card. Enjoy a tractor trailer ride and the first train of the season.
Hat Making 11am – 3pm Wednesday 7th Providing protection or making the most outrageous fashion statement? From bowler to baseball, straw to felt, find out the history of the humble hat. Then put your heads together and design your own.
The Russians are Coming 10am – 4pm Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th Watch experienced re-enactors and learn more about the role of the Russian military in the early 20th Century.
Textile Day 10am – 4pm Sunday 18th Meet the York and District Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers in a day of hands-on demonstrations and skills sharing. Enjoy a sale of equipment, fibres and books. Formed in 1960, the Guild is proudly celebrating its Golden Anniversary this year.
May
May Day Story Telling 10am – 4pm Sunday 2nd & Monday 3rd Explore the site as you have never seen it before. Come a-Maying with Nettlefoot Kate. Open your eyes and ears and discover Mayday myths and folktales. Make a May Basket or a May Crown before story telling around the fire. Dress for the weather.
Wild West Weekend 10am – 5pm Sunday 30th & Monday 31st Following the success of last year’s event when we all ‘Went Western’. Why not come along in fancy dress and get into the spirit of it. Meet the cowboys on the fort, pan for gold or try your hand with a lasso. You may even see a ‘shoot out’ before taking a leisurely train ride.
June
Medieval Mayhem 11am – 3pm Tuesday 1st and Thursday 3rd Join us to celebrate the month of mid summers eve with medieval activities such as archery and candle dipping. Make a plague bag and understand more about the Mystery Plays which take place next month.
Fun with Foods 11am – 3pm Wednesday 2nd “Don’t play with your food!” That’s exactly what we plan to do today. Add a pipe cleaner and googly eyes and see what you can create.
Fathers Day Weekend 10am – 5pm Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th A weekend dedicated to vintage machinery and transport in days gone by. See an impressive selection of vehicles through the ages and learn about the demise of the Rural Railways.
July
The Ancient Craft of Beekeeping 12pm – 4pm Sunday 4th Learn about how country folk in Britain have kept bees over the centuries, gathering honey for their meals and bees wax for their candles. Hold a glass observation hive in your hands and watch the Queen and her workers storing honey. With a prize for the best dressed bee, why not come dressed up? The day includes craft activities and promises to be a fun and instructive afternoon for all ages.
Clay Day 10am – 4pm Sunday 18th Join local potter Catherine Boyne-Whitelegg and learn some tips of the trade! Understand the story of pottery through the ages, and make your very own thumb pot!
August
New for the Summer Holidays! On Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the summer holidays, take part in a wide range of Living History activities. Be taken through your paces (safely) with spear drill, take a guided tour of the village. Make a Roman pot or Viking bracelet. Learn how to wattle and daub or watch a fire making demo. Phone in the morning for details.
Teddy Bears Picnic, 10.30am - 12pm Tuesday 3rd, Wednesday 4th, Thursday 5th Bring along your favourite Teddy and enjoy craft making, games and story telling around the site. Now in its third year this popular event is spread over three days. Booking is recommended.
Scarecrow Making, 11am – 3pm Wednesday 11th & Sunday 15th Join in the mid week fun and make a scarecrow to be displayed on site. All materials are provided but feel free to bring your own accessories for that extra edge! If you can’t make Wednesday, enjoy a second chance Sunday.
Rural Games, 10am – 5pm Sunday 22nd Come out to play! Have a go at traditional games that your grandparents might have enjoyed such as hopscotch or skipping. Try your hand at games which have stood the test of time; tug-of-war, skittles or horseshoe quoits and maybe learn a few new ones!
Build a Den Day, 10am – 5pm Sunday 29th & Monday 30th Join us for a weekend of fun, where we will be looking at habitats. Get stuck in and make your own family den with the materials provided. Now, when was the last time you did that?
September
It’s a Dog’s Life, 10am – 4pm Sunday 19th A day dedicated to man’s best friend. Come and learn about the different jobs that our ‘four legged friends’ are trained to do. Bring your own dog to enter our dog show, there’s bound to be a category that’s suitable!
Autumn and Harvest Celebrations, 10am – 4pm Sunday 26th Celebrate the traditions and customs of Harvest with us. Explore autumn in all its colourful glory. Make the most of the outdoors with our Scavenger Hunt, collecting leaves and berries before the winter evenings draw in.
October
The Big Draw, 11am – 4pm Sunday 10th Be a part of this national event taking place around the country. Experience and explore with a variety of materials and express yourself in your own individual way. Whatever your age or ability we have activities for you to take part in. Whether individually, or on a more collaborative scale, come along and make your mark.
Halloween, 11am – 3 pm Wednesday 27th Join us for a truly spooky experience. Carve scary lanterns from vegetables. Make a mask and that all important Trick or Treat basket before a trip to the Haunted House for a Ghost Story!
November
Deck the Halls, 11am – 3pm Sunday 21st Join us today in preparation for the Festive Season. Be inspired with creative ideas for the home and tree. So come one, come all, whatever your age, ability or budget.
December
Santa Specials, 10am – 3pm 4th & 5th, 11th & 12th, 18th – 21st. The big event of the year! Join the Elves as they show you around Santa’s Village. Visit their workshop and take a sneaky peak around Santa’s house.
Enjoy a train ride where you meet the man himself and find out if you’ve been good this year. After all the excitement let your grown ups settle down with a mince pie and sherry in front of a roaring fire.
