March 2008

 Mothers Day, 11am- 4pm

Sunday 2nd
Treat your mum to a three course meal of traditional beef and Yorkshire pudding, including a free gift for Mum! Please book your table by Monday 25th February 2008. Meal prices are additional.

 Staying Alive! 10am- 4pm

Sunday 9th
Help keep the rural trades alive by learning the art of dry stone walling. Help repair our field walls, learn the variations of local stones and techniques used. Help us to conserve our duck pond, with the Ponds Conservation Trust. Explore pond life, plants and wildlife but don’t forget to bring your wellies!

 Easter Eggstravaganza,10am- 4pm

Sunday 23rd & Monday 24th
Join in an Easter egg hunt with the Easter Bunny. Come and meet our spring lambs at feeding time. Easter craft-making sessions include Easter baskets using the art of willow weaving, corn dolly making, make your own Easter bonnets, eggs and cards. Machinery displays, steam train and tractor trailer rides timetabled throughout the day.

 Animal Farm, 11am- 3pm

Wednesday 26th
In association with Cruckley Animal Farm, come and learn about our rare breeds. Meet the sheep, cow, chickens, donkey and piglets up close. Help at feeding time and learn about the care and conservation of rare breeds in Yorkshire.

April

 The Upper Crust, 11am- 5pm

Sunday 13th
Learn the story of Bread with our expert Andrew Wood. Make your own bread and learn about the process of kneading, grinding and yeast effects. Sample your own bread bun fresh from the oven! See the Vikings making flatbread in the village. Children’s activities include dough modelling, flour dipping and much more!

 Food Glorious Food, 10am- 5pm

Sunday 20th April
Learn about the processes of growing, producing and preparing of fresh, local produce with FEAST. Including cheese making, jams and preserves, sausage making, cake making and lots more! Chris Bax, will take you on a ‘taste of the wild’ tour, understanding wild plants and herbs, and their use in cooking. Children’s activities include, fruit skewers, pea shooting competitions, blindfold tasting and egg and spoon races!

Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th 

History at Murton II, 10am - 5pm

Experienced local re-enactors and living history enthusiasts will again be presenting a series of top quality living history displays in and around the Viking village.  Hands on history comes alive at Murton as nationally renowned groups portray characters from across the years, beginning with the 18th Century and ending with the twentieth Century.


May

Maypole Dancing, 10am- 5pm

Sunday 4th & Monday 5th
Put on your dancing shoes and enjoy traditional maypole dancing this May Bank Holiday.

A whole host of family friendly stalls, games and activities included.

 Wings & Things, 10am-5pm

Sunday 11th
See a Falconry display and watch the white headed vulture and the white tailed sea eagle in full flight. Get up close for a handling session of kestrels, eagle owls and barn owls. Learn the truth about bats from the North Yorkshire Bat Group, and make your own bird box to take home. Falconry display starts at 12pm.

 Bugs & Things, 10am-5pm

Sunday 25th & Monday 26th
Come along and make a willow mini beast to put in our bug garden. Understand the importance of insects in our eco system and the jobs they perform. Try your hand at worm charming, and making compost cafés, beetle banks and bee hotels. Take part in the wildlife species and scavenger hunt.

 June

Full Steam Ahead this Fathers Day! 10am- 5pm

Sunday 15th
A day dedicated to machinery, including an impressive display of engines. See the full size 14 ton Clayton and Shuttle traction engine and miniature engines, including a Foster traction engine and Fowler showman’s traction engine. A vintage tractor display and steam train rides timetabled throughout the day.

 Rural Railways, 10am- 5pm

Sunday 29th
Step aboard our very own Steam train and discover what life was like for rural railways, in association with the Derwent Valley Light Railway. See the Heavy Horse pulling carts for loading and unloading. See shunting demonstrations showing how goods were transported into and out of the countryside. Help sort the mail to the right villages with freight and passenger trains timetabled throughout the day. 

July

 Sunday 6th,10am- 5pm

The Story of Wool
Learn the story of wool from fleece to jumper. See sheep shearing demonstrations using both traditional and modern methods. Hands-on activities include wool preparation, carding, spinning, weaving, knitting, felt-making, designing your own cards using transfer printing, hessian weaving and sewing!

 The Story of Wood, 10am- 5pm

Sunday 20th
Learn the story of wood, through woodland crafts, including wood turning, chainsaw sculptures, green woodworking, lathe work and hurdle making. Children’s activities include model making and woodland crafts.

 The Story of Clay, 11am- 4pm

Wednesday 30th
Join world expert and renowned potter, John Hudson as he demonstrates the art of pottery on a medieval kick wheel. Learn the story of pottery through the ages, and take home your very own John Hudson pot! Activities include making thumb pots and mosaic tiles.

August

 Teddy Bears Picnic, 10.30- 12pm

Wednesday 6th
Bring along your favourite teddy for a teddy bears tea party out on the lawn. Take part in teddy bear games and trails, make your own teddy mask and enjoy story-telling in the three bears’ cottage.

Down on the Farm with the Heavy Horse, 10am- 5pm

Sunday 17th
See Heavy Horse displays on harrowing the land and seed drilling. Learn for yourself how to churn butter, and make dairy cheese. See the blacksmith working at his forge. Meet the animals, with grooming, thatching and even mucking out activities! Help the Farmer’s wife with rag-rugging, baking and washing. Machinery displays, tractor-trailer and steam train rides included.

 Scarecrow Making, 11am- 3pm

Wednesday 20th
Help Farmer Atkinson to discourage birds from eating his crops by making your own Scarecrow to be judged and then displayed in our Scarecrow Sculpture garden. Children’s activities include straw dolly making and scarecrow puppets!

 Rural Games, 10am- 5pm

Sunday 24th & Monday 25th
Come out to play this summer with traditional rural games on the lawn. Have a go at some of the old favourites, such as hopscotch, skipping and tug of war. Try a few new ones such as stick and hoop, coggy on coggy off, nine mens morris, horsehoe coits and much more!

 September

Harvest Festival, 11am- 4pm

Sunday 7th
From sickle to combine, see the story of harvest come to life with a traditional service in the FourSeasonsBuilding. Try corn dolly making, vegetable bingo, dough modelling, potato printing and apple bobbing. Help us decorate the farm cart with flowers to celebrate the coming of Harvest
