How do we get to the museum? TOP
There is easy access from Hull, Bridlington, Leeds and Scarborough. Just off the A64 Leeds - Scarborough road. Take the A166 Bridlington road, then first left to Murton. We are the third entrance on the left on Murton Lane. Just three miles from York city centre. Follow the brown heritage signs for the Yorkshire Museum of Farming.
What facilities do you have on site? TOP
As well as the museum itself and living history areas, on our 14 acre site we have livestock paddocks, a duck pond, children’s play area, picnic area (for admission paying visitors), free car and coach parking, toilets including disabled, baby changing facilities, a gift shop and a café.
Do you have any animals? TOP
Yes, we have an array of livestock which varies throughout the season but which typically includes sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, rabbits, ponies, and cows. Although we are not a ‘petting farm’ our animals are usually pretty friendly and will happily wander over to say ‘hi’.
Are the trains running? TOP
The Derwent Valley Light Railway endeavour to run trains every Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday between Easter and the end of September, and of course for the Santa Specials in December. However, from time to time there will be essential track work or train maintenance which may prevent trains from running. Please check beforehand.
Is there anything happening on the site? TOP
Go to the “Events” page for our full programme of exciting holiday and weekend events. We also frequently host re-enactment groups over weekends; keep an eye on the website for details.
Are dogs allowed? TOP
Yes, but they must be kept on a lead at all times and please clean up after them!
Which part of the site is open? TOP
During school term-time, if there are a number of school parties booked in, there may be restricted areas. You will be advised at the admissions desk on arrival. The best time to see the Viking Village and the Roman Fort is at the weekends or during school holidays.
Can we take photographs? TOP
You may as long as they are not for any financial gain. You cannot take photographs of any of the children who are here with the school parties. If you wish to take photos for any other reason than your own use e.g. to go with a article for publication, for a book you may be writing etc, we request that you ring to get permission before you arrive.
If we want to bring a school party how far in front do we have to book? TOP
For Danelaw, you need to book at least 12/18 months in advance; Brigantium is about 4/6 months in advance as is the WWII Home Front/Tudor/Victorian experience. For guided tours of Danelaw – about 4 months in advance.
If we want to book you to come into school for an activity day or presentation, how far in advance? TOP
We recommend you book an in school visit 3 or 4 months in advance.
What should the children wear when we come on a visit? TOP
The adults and children should be dressed appropriately for the weather and being outside most, if not all, of the day. We make our costumes large enough to fit over several layers of winter clothing. A layer can always be taken off! If it’s winter, the children can also wear hats/hoods and gloves. Remember in wet weather you might need a change of footwear. Coach drivers don’t like to see muddy wellies approaching their coaches – it makes them go a bit red in the face
May we come on a preview on a weekend or in the school holidays to do our school’s risk assessment? TOP
Yes, you certainly can. You must ring first to book yourselves in so a member of the living history team is available. The preview will last about an hour.
Do you need paying on the day of the visit? TOP
No we don’t. The invoice will be presented to you on the day of the visit, whether you are on site or we are in school. If you are able to pay on the day – terrific, but if the invoice is going to your LEA, please ensure it is sent off promptly.
Many other questions will be answered in the literature sent to you once you have made a school booking. Contact us at 01904 489966 or enquiries@murtonpark.co.uk.
