February 2012

Charge!

Visitors take part in a Viking charge at the Be a Viking event 2011

 Be a Viking!

Our Be a Viking events are running this February as part of the Jorvik Viking Festival. The events will run on Tuesday 14th, Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th and there will be two sessions each day at 11am and 2pm. Dress up as a Viking and visit our Viking village, where you will learn what life was like 1,100 year ago in authentic surroundings. Enjoy hands-on activities including pot-making and spear drill. Booking for these events is essential so please drop us an email (events@murrtonpark.co.uk) or give us a ring (01904 489966). We still have places available! Please note, the cost of the event is the usual site admission price but the farming museum itself will be closed during the events as we are still renovating for our seasonal re-opening on 31st March. The events will take place on the Danelaw Living History areas of the site. See website for full details.

Museum Seasonal Re-Opening 2012

The museum will re-open for the season on March 31st. We are currently renovating some of the museum displays ready for the new season. Over the March 31st and April 1st weekend, we will be kicking off in style with our ‘Celebrating Country Crafts’ weekend. Attractions and activities will include pottery, metalwork, woodwork, leatherwork and much, much more. There will be new spring livestock too as well as plenty of Living History on site all weekend. Details and further information will appear on the events page of our website:  http://www.murtonpark.co.uk/html/events.html so keep checking for details.

Jeffery De Goat is awarded Queen’s Jubilee Medal!

Our Toggenburg goat Jeffery (Jeffers) has been awarded a Queen’s Jubilee medal in his capacity as official mascot and Flying Officer with 609 squadron RAF Leeming. He hoped to travel to the squadron’s base to take part in the ceremony which took place on Saturday 11th February but unfortunately the snowy wastes of North Yorkshire proved too risky for his trailer so his award has been postponed for a week. Jeffery has taken the setback with the dignity one would expect from a goat of his rank and we look forward to the award ceremony to be held at the museum soon. Jeffery will be sharing his thoughts on the occasion and some photos of the day on his Facebook page.

Yorkshire Women’s Land Army

The museum holds an important collection of Women’s Land Army material relating to Yorkshire. Part of our developments for 2012 will involve further work and activity relating to this impressive regional collection. We are hoping to secure funding for an outreach and activity programme which will culminate in an exhibition in newly created space in our Four Seasons Building. Anyone who has an interest in getting involved with this future project or would like to know more, please get in touch. We would also like to hear from anyone with connections to the Women’s Land Army or who may know of local ex-members. See our website for contact details or email esther@murtonpark.co.uk
