School’s Out Summer Holiday Family Activities

Schools Out!

Visit Murton Park – what will you discover?

Come and learn about the history of farming at Murton Park. Follow our audio guide around our site to hear how the earliest farmers settled on the land around 10,000 years ago and started to shape the landscape. Learn about the impact that successive waves of invaders and settlers had, and hear how the Romans, Saxons and Vikings brought their own ideas, changing the way people lived over the centuries. Learn about how the landscape changed during Tudor times before going on to see the impact that increasing mechanisation had on farming practice. See our collection of vintage tractors and learn about the contribution of the Women’s Land Army in the first and second world wars.

Enjoy the play area and follow the nature trail – and look out for our rare breed livestock. Why not visit on a Sunday and enjoy a ride on the Derwent Valley Light Railway?

Members of the living history team will be running a variety of ‘mini-bite’ workshops at set times on weekdays only. The workshops will be run at various locations around the site at 13:00 and 15:00. Each workshop will last between 15 to 30 minutes and will cover topics such as:

  • Make your own Viking oil lamp
  • Viking fire lighting demonstrations
  • Learn how to be a Viking warrior
  • Make your own Viking board game.
No need to book in advance. Either ring on the day for details or just check the ‘What’s on today’ board in the foyer and/or check with reception on arrival
