Making Murton Park a more welcoming place for everyone
We’re excited to introduce our new Explorer Backpacks, which have been created to help make visits to Murton Park more accessible, comfortable and enjoyable for visitors with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
Packed full of helpful resources, these backpacks are designed to support visitors as they explore the park. Whether it’s something to squeeze, fidget with, or use to help understand what’s coming next, each backpack is there to make the visit feel calmer, easier and more fun. You’re welcome to use it in whatever way feels most comfortable for you.
Our Explorer Backpacks are available to be borrowed from the Front Desk and can be used by children, young people and adults. You can use them independently, with family members, carers or support workers. There’s no right or wrong way to use them, and no pressure to use everything inside.
We’re proud to be making Murton Park a more welcoming place for everyone, and we can’t wait for you to try out an Explorer Backpack on your next visit!
What is included in the backpack?
Backpacks have been created with visitors with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities in mind; however, anyone is welcome to use them.
With grateful thanks to Museum Development North’s Strategic Grants Fund, whose support made these Explorer Backpacks possible and helps us continue improving access for all our visitors.

All we ask for is your name and mobile number so that we can contact you if it is getting close to closing time or the backpack has accidentally been taken home.
Clipboard with space for planning, Planning cards, Notebook, Ear defenders, Cow squishy, Hand puppet, Rainbow fidget, Fidget cube, Wind-up torch, magnifying glass, 3-minute sand timer, Sunglasses (small and large sizes), reading overlays, Pencils, Hand sanitiser. The important thing is you don’t have to use everything if you don’t want to.
We have tried to keep things the same as much as possible, but the hand puppets are different farm animals, the ear defenders and small sunglasses are different colours.
