Celebrating Milestones: VE Day and VJ Day at Murton Park

On Friday, 15th August, Murton Park, will honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) and VJ Day (Victory over Japan) with a living history Homefront day, featuring a street party in the park.

Taking place on VJ Day, the park’s Living History team, dressed in period costumes, will host wartime games such as Splat-the-Rat and Hook-a-Duck. Attendees can enjoy 1940s music performed by Fladam Theatre and receive tea dance instruction from Lottie of Dance the Past. Magician Professor Dan will entertain with a Punch and Judy show, while Derwent Valley Light Railway volunteers, Tony and Glynnis, will run their popular make-do-and-mend stand in the museum.

Murton Park boasts the country’s largest Women’s Land Army exhibition in its museum, and Collections Manager, Emma Grimmer will discuss various aspects of the exhibition as part of the event on the 15th of August, too.

Craig Benton, Site Director, says,

“By incorporating interactive activities and live performances, we hope to ignite a passion for history in children and adults alike,” he adds. “Our Living History Days are designed to offer a dynamic and engaging way to learn about the past, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the events that shaped our world.”

In anticipation of the Homefront Day event, the park has also planned special activities leading up to the celebration, which underscore Murton Park’s commitment to preserving history and educating the community in an enjoyable and meaningful way.
