Homefront Day itinerary

What to expect from your Home Front day:

  • At the start of your Home Front day, you will hear an introductory talk covering key topics about World War II. This will include the timeline of the war, the countries involved, the concept of the Home Front, and information about evacuation.
  • You will head into our Museum to do housework  (washing with a mangle) and rag rugging (using rags to make do and mend), and Stubbs Shop to learn about Rationing.
  • You will take part in an air raid drill, which will involve getting into the air raid shelters.
  • A 30-minute lunch break will be taken in the classroom
  • The ARP officer will explain their role, how to identify bombs, and how to extinguish fires.
  • You get the opportunity to handle real artefacts from our museum collection and investigate different characters from the war.
  • You will learn about gas mask drills.
  • You can find the risk assessment here: Homefront Day Risk Assessment

Before your visit:

  • Please consider appropriate clothing – we are an outside site, so wet weather clothing, warm clothing for winter, sun cream for summer, sensible shoes all year, and wellies if wet.
  • Please make sure you have contacted us with any additional needs your group might have.
  • Please can you prearrange your children into three groups. The number of groups is a guide and can change on the day.
  • Please note the minimum number of pupils is 25 and the maximum is 36 pupils
  • You are required to bring with you one adult for every 10 children

Upon arrival:

  • Our operating hours are from 10 AM to 3 PM. If you need to adjust these times, please let us know; we can generally accommodate small changes. Additionally, if you are running late, a quick call—even just 10 minutes in advance—would be very helpful.
  • When you arrive, please ensure that the school bus or minibus parks in front of the white gate. For safety reasons, we kindly ask that children not walk across the car park or the roundabout. Moreover, although there may be a queue of other buses, our Murton staff will be available to assist you upon your arrival.
  • Upon arriving, a staff member in costume will greet you. Before the children disembark from the bus, we would appreciate it if we could speak with a lead teacher. This conversation will allow us to confirm attendance numbers (for both staff and students), discuss any additional needs, determine the time of departure, and address whether you would like to visit the gift shop. This information is vital as it will help us plan the day more effectively.
  • Meanwhile, while you assist the children in disembarking, our Murton staff will handle the necessary paperwork. Finally, an invoice will be generated based on the final numbers and sent to your school. Thank you for your cooperation!

We look forward to welcoming you!
